Librarian Personal Philosophy

Leader: As the librarian at Painter Middle School, I lead our students into the future. I am committed to finding ways to incorporate new technology into daily instructional practice so that students acquire the 21st Century information skills that will be needed for success. To fulfill this commitment, I will:

  • Identify emerging technologies and look for opportunities to acquire it for student use
  • Maintain a professional relationship with teachers, staff, administrators, students, and parents
  • Work to develop a campus improvement plan
  • Participate in the creation of information literacy curriculum for our district
  • Establish and maintain connections to local, state and national literacy organizations in order to continue a thorough understanding of current literacy standards for students

Instructional Partner: As an instructional partner at Painter Middle School, I will collaborate with teachers, administrators and instructional staff to improve student achievement on our campus. Joining forces with my colleagues, I will:

  • Work diligently to learn the curriculum requirements for all subjects currently taught on our campus.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect an understanding of the learning styles and needs of all students
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for students in accordance to the guidelines established in Individualized Education Plans (IEP)
  • Work cooperatively with other campus Instructional Coaches in designing criteria for campus instructional routines
  • Initiate collaboration with classroom teachers to plan, teach and assess inquiry learning opportunities that are incorporated into subject area instruction

Information Specialist: As the librarian, I am dedicated to the support of student achievement by providing information resources in all available formats, along with the supplemental equipment needed to access and use the information properly. To that end, I will:

  • Build a core collection that provides the breadth and depth necessary to enhance student achievement campus-wide.
  • Design and implement a school-wide 2-day orientation for students in the location of use of available library resources
  • Train our new teachers on the use of available information and technology resources
  • Design and teach campus-wide staff development training in the use of new technology to be integrated into instruction.
  • Use technology to allow 24/7 access to library resources for all members of our campus learning community
  • Apply digital applications to connect our school to the global community
  • Initiate instruction for teachers and students on the correct and ethical use of information

Teacher: Along with the classroom teachers at Painter Middle School, I share the responsibility for the achievement and success of our students. In my capacity as a teacher, I will:

  • Conduct ongoing evaluations of student achievement through formal and informal assessments
  • Design and implement a reading tutorial program for at-risk students
  • Organize activities and promotions to encourage the development of the love of reading.
  • Create opportunities for students to build on prior knowledge for the development of new understanding
  • Guide students to locate and use information in different formats for a self-defined purpose so that students equate research with problem solving
  • Allow students to develop collaboration skills by providing opportunities for working with others instead of in isolation
  • Encourage independent thinking by reinforcing students’ abilities for constructive self-assessment of their work

Program Administrator: As the librarian, I am charged with establishing and maintaining the entire library program in a way that will work efficiently for the educational success of our students. In the course of that responsibility, I will:

  • Develop and continually evaluate the mission of our program.
  • Implement a strategic plan that will enable the library to fulfill its mission.
  • Design and establish library policies that support the plan and mission of the program.
  • Order and maintain supplies related to all library operations.
  • Work with colleagues to plan the yearly budget
  • Work with administrators in staffing considerations.
  • Manage the library space for maximum use by students and teachers.
  • Create and maintain the library’s digital space to keep all stakeholders informed about library opportunities, as well as to provide unlimited access to library resources 24/7.
